Year 5 visited Birmingham Conservatoire to perform in a concert called ‘Voices Unite’ with the schools from the Kingfisher Collaboration – Somerville, Redhill and St Benedict’s. It was a celebration of cross-cultural music-making featuring the RBC India Music Ensemble, the RBC LAEP Ensemble, Classical Indian Carnatic Vocalist and visiting Chair of Indian Music at RBC.
Some of us were chosen to compere the event and work with a poet, Joe Cook. We wrote different lines about our school and Birmingham. These were amalgamated into a poem that we shared in the concert.
We travelled on the bus and sat on the top deck! Everyone was excited and chatting. When we got nearer to town, we spotted the enormous, whale-back of the Selfridges building!
When we arrived at the Conservatoire, we were shown into a room and were given a special red t-shirt to wear. Shortly after, we went into the auditorium (a performance space with a stage) and started to rehearse. We had to stand for a long time rehearsing… The songs we sang were: Don’t Worry Be Happy, Anjali Anjali, Blackbird, Taare Zameen Par and I can’t find Brummagem.
After lunch, lots of parents were in the audience waiting for us to sing! We were all very excited but nervous to perform to everyone. Everyone loved it and were clapping and cheering so loudly! Our parents and teachers were so proud of us!
Later, we caught the bus back home. We had a great time.
