To celebrate achieving our Gold Rights Respecting Award, we held a Culture Day where we celebrated our cultural heritage. We came to school wearing traditional clothes from the countries our families originate from or colours of different flags.
Nursery celebrated Culture day by working with children in Year 6. Morning Nursery created art work with their Year 6 friends which celebrated them and their culture. Afternoon Nursery joined Year 6 to play games and follow dances from different cultures.
During circle time, in Reception, we spoke about different cultures in our school including the food we eat and the celebrations we have. We did lots of different activities where we dressed up figures in traditional clothing, and made mehndi patterns. We also enjoyed showing Year 5 our clothes and having story time with them.
Year 1 celebrated Culture Day by taking part in lots of activities that showed them more about the cultures in school. They made flags of the countries are a part of; made paper dolls that looked like them and dressed them up in traditional clothes; they had henna designs on their hands; and took a trip around the world and tried foods from different countries!
In Year 2, they learned how to count to 10 in different languages and then played Bingo to consolidate this. They learned a lot about Diwali and flags all around the world. They made and tried a traditional South Asian drink- ‘mango lassi’. It was delicious!
Year 3 enjoyed learning about each other’s cultures. They listened to each other’s traditional music and watched traditional dances from each country and started dancing along in the classroom. In the afternoon, they were creative and painted/collaged different country flags and created informative posters about their cultures.
We had a brilliant day in Year 4! We dressed in our cultural heritage clothing. We learnt about the countries that we come from. We also made fact files, decorated flags, counted to ten and heard songs from various cultures. Sarina brought in a prayer mat too.
Children in Year 5 researched and shared information about different countries together as well as reading stories to the Reception children.
The Year 6 children used secondary sources to research information about their country of origin and created a PowerPoint. They were then given the opportunity to present their findings and facts to the class and share the cultural background information with the class.
